A family in Buca Village, Vanua Levu, is mourning the loss of Selai Ragata, a grandmother in her 60s, following a heartbreaking road accident on Tuesday near Nasue Settlement in Vunilagi. Ms. Ragata was returning home from Savusavu with her children and grandchildren after replacing a lost bank card linked to their social welfare assistance when their vehicle collided with another car traveling from Qaravutu toward Savusavu.

Police reports indicate that the tragic accident occurred when Ms. Ragata’s vehicle veered into the oncoming lane, resulting in a collision with an approaching car. Despite immediate medical attention, Ms. Ragata was pronounced dead upon arrival at Savusavu Hospital. Two of her grandchildren, along with her daughter Mereoni and son Tomasi, remain hospitalized as they continue to receive care.

Ms. Ragata is survived by her husband, Pauliasi Qaqa, five children, and 11 grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of love that will be remembered by her family and community. The investigation is ongoing, with police confirming that the driver of the other vehicle will be questioned in relation to the crash.

This tragedy marks the first road fatality this year, contrasting with last year, which experienced no fatalities during the same timeframe. It serves as a sobering reminder of road safety and the profound impact of traffic accidents on families and communities.
