A rehabilitation program has been launched in Vanua Levu to assist those affected by Tropical Cyclone Rae. Minister for Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka, who is currently touring the impacted areas, announced that the ministry is mobilizing resources to facilitate recovery efforts.
During his visit, the minister disclosed that a variety of seeds and planting materials are ready for distribution, particularly aimed at the Eastern and Northern divisions. Dry seeds are accessible at all agriculture stations, while seedlings for crops including eggplant, tomato, and bongo chili are expected to be distributed by the following week.
In meetings with Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima, Ditoka received vital updates on the cyclone’s aftermath. Although severe damage was largely avoided, the heavy rainfall associated with TC Rae has led to localized flooding, complicating land preparation for new crops. The minister recognized that while the adverse weather may delay crop establishment, plans are in motion to initiate rehabilitation as soon as conditions improve.
The current response resonates with past emergencies where community involvement and infrastructure enhancements were essential in lessening disaster impacts. The proactive measures being taken, including the stockpiling of agricultural resources and community engagement, illustrate a strong commitment to recovery from local authorities and residents alike.
As Vanua Levu strives to overcome this weather-related challenge, the focus on rehabilitation signifies optimism for a swift recovery and highlights the community’s resilience in facing adversity. Ongoing efforts to provide necessary resources are expected to play a crucial role in restoring livelihoods and building a renewed sense of security within the community.
