Vandalism Threatens Safety on Suva’s Queen Elizabeth Drive

Several months after finishing the $62.944 million Queen Elizabeth Drive Road Project in Suva, the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has reported incidents of vandalism and theft.

Recent inspections by the FRA revealed that multiple street lights were damaged, and important garden light cables were reportedly stolen.

FRA chairperson Atunaisa Nayago expressed that these acts pose a significant threat to public safety. He emphasized that vandalism and theft are not only illegal but can also be dangerous.

According to Nayago, the compromised street lights and missing cables increase the risk of accidents and injuries for both road users and pedestrians. He warned that such unlawful behavior could lead to legal action against those responsible.

Nayago urged the public to take pride in their community and show respect for public property. He indicated that vandalizing road infrastructure undermines community safety and hampers efforts to maintain a secure and well-lit environment for everyone.

He called upon the community to help safeguard the country’s infrastructure, stating that collective effort is essential to ensure roads remain safe and functional.

“Protecting public property is a shared responsibility that impacts the well-being of all,” Mr. Nayago concluded.
