Vandalism Threatens Safety on Suva’s New Road Project

Just months after finishing the $62.944 million Queen Elizabeth Drive Road Project in Suva, the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has reported several incidents of vandalism and theft.

During a recent inspection, the FRA discovered that several street lights had been damaged and important garden light cables had allegedly been stolen. FRA chairperson Atunaisa Nayago indicated that these acts pose significant risks to public safety, highlighting that such vandalism and theft are both illegal and hazardous.

He expressed concern that broken street lights and absent cables jeopardize the safety of both drivers and pedestrians, raising the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

“The FRA emphasizes that such unlawful actions may lead to legal consequences for those responsible,” Mr. Nayago stated. He called on the public to take pride in their civic responsibilities and to respect public property.

Mr. Nayago further noted that damage to road infrastructure undermines community safety and hinders the efforts to maintain a secure and well-lit environment. He appealed to the community for support in protecting the latest infrastructure throughout the nation.

“Together, we must ensure our roads remain safe and functional,” he said, adding that the protection of public property is a collective responsibility that affects everyone’s well-being.
