Vandalism Threatens Safety on Suva’s New Road Project

The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has reported incidents of vandalism and theft occurring just months after the completion of the $62.944 million Queen Elizabeth Drive Road Project in Suva. A recent inspection revealed that several street lights were damaged, and important garden light cables were reportedly stolen.

Atunaisa Nayago, the chairperson of FRA, expressed concern about how these acts significantly jeopardize public safety. He stated that the vandalism and theft not only violate the law but also pose dangers to individuals.

Nayago highlighted that the damage to street lights and the absence of cables increase the risk of accidents for both road users and pedestrians. He warned that such unlawful actions could result in legal action against those responsible.

The FRA is calling for the public to take pride in their civic duties and respect public property. Nayago emphasized that harming or stealing road infrastructure is harmful to community safety and undermines efforts to maintain a secure environment.

He urged the community to contribute to protecting the new infrastructure across the nation, asserting the importance of collaboration in keeping roads safe and functional. “Protecting public property is a shared responsibility that impacts everyone’s well-being,” Nayago concluded.
