Rob Valetini, a backrower with ties to Fiji, has been awarded the prestigious John Eales Medal for the second consecutive year, receiving the honor for 2024 on Wednesday. Valetini triumphed over fellow backrowers Fraser McReight and Harry Wilson after an impressive season donning the gold jersey.
At just 26 years old, Valetini has made a name for himself as one of the leading backrowers in World Rugby. He is now among an elite group of players, becoming the third athlete to win back-to-back John Eales Medals, following in the footsteps of Michael Hooper and Israel Folau.
Throughout the 2024 season, Valetini played in every match for the Wallabies, transitioning to blindside flanker after the second Test against Wales. He demonstrated exceptional skill on the field, completing six turnovers, 78 tackles, and numerous powerful carries when his team needed momentum the most.
With this achievement, Valetini joins the ranks of other rugby greats like Hooper, Folau, Marika Koroibete, David Pocock, Nathan Sharpe, and George Smith in having won multiple John Eales Medals.
After receiving the award, Valetini expressed his gratitude, stating, “Blessed and grateful to have won the award. I wouldn’t be able to do this without my teammates doing their jobs and the coaching staff for backing me to play my game.”
This recognition not only underscores Valetini’s individual talent but also reflects the strong teamwork and dedication within the Wallabies squad. His ongoing success serves as an inspiration for aspiring rugby players, showcasing the value of hard work, perseverance, and collaboration in achieving greatness.
