Virmi Vakatawa has officially joined the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, completing the team’s roster for the upcoming 2026 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition. This announcement puts an end to months of speculation regarding his rugby career, and he has been actively training with the squad in New Zealand in preparation for their pre-season trial match.
In an exclusive interview with Times Sport at the team’s training camp at Ngamuwhaine Lodge, located near Tauranga, Vakatawa expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to join the Drua. “I’m so blessed to be part of the (Swire Shipping Fijian) Drua for this new season,” he shared, highlighting his excitement about contributing to the team.
Vakatawa made waves last year while competing in the Skipper Cup with the Naitasiri senior men’s team, which initiated discussions about his next steps in rugby. His impressive combination of speed, dynamism, and force makes him a welcome addition to Super Rugby competition, a transition he has long anticipated. Reflecting on his experience, Vakatawa recalled watching Super Rugby’s evolution over the years and acknowledged the high skill levels of players in the league.
As he returns to Fiji, Vakatawa views this opportunity as a fresh start. “The journey I’ve been through has been tough, and I want to give thanks to the Lord for guiding me from France,” he noted, emphasizing his determination to make a significant impact.
Teammate Tuidraki Samusamuvodre expressed his excitement about playing alongside Vakatawa, stating, “I’m excited to play again with him, especially with his impressive background.” This sentiment was echoed by Fijian Drua’s general manager for commercial activities, Shane Hussein, who spoke highly of Vakatawa’s potential contributions to the team, both on and off the field.
With their first pre-season trial match looming against the Chiefs at Blake Park in Mount Maunganui, scheduled for 2 PM today, Vakatawa’s inclusion promises to bring a blend of experience and high-caliber performance to the Fijian Drua as they embark on their Super Rugby Pacific journey. The team’s prospects appear bright with such talent onboard, inspiring hopes for a successful season ahead.
