USPSA Stands Firm Amid Staff Union Strike: What’s at Stake?

The University of the South Pacific Students Association (USPSA) has clarified that it is independent from the groups organizing the current strike by two staff unions at the Laucala campus. Association President Christopher Siliva expressed concerns regarding misinformation that has led some members to consider joining the strike based on inaccurate and exaggerated claims, affecting their understanding of the situation.

Siliva noted that while individual members may support the strike, the student body as a whole will not participate. He raised concerns regarding the staff unions’ demand for the removal of the Vice-Chancellor and President, suggesting that this may conflict with legal protocols governing the Vice-Chancellor’s conduct at USP. He emphasized that such actions could undermine the rule of law and negatively impact all staff union members.

“It is vital for all parties to follow the established legal frameworks at USP to ensure fair and just outcomes,” Siliva stated. He acknowledged the essential contributions of all staff but warned that the strike could disrupt classes, delay academic progress, and obstruct access to vital services for students, particularly with final examinations approaching.

Siliva called for open dialogue, respect for differing viewpoints, and a continued commitment to the educational objectives of the university.
