USP to Challenge Strike Rulings in Court: What’s Next?

The University of the South Pacific plans to pursue legal action against the decisions made by the Permanent Secretary of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations regarding the strike conducted by two USP Unions.

In a confirmed email, the university warned that staff participating in the strike would not receive payment for the duration of their protest.

According to the communication, “Staff who are members of either of the two unions and do not report to work or adhere to their regular office hours, and who are not on pre-approved leave, will be presumed to be on strike.”

It was also indicated that, except in cases of verified emergencies, no leave applications would be granted due to the significant impact the strike has on university operations.

The university has stated that the ongoing dispute pertains to matters that management deems outside the scope of existing collective contracts and employment terms.

USP emphasized, “At this time, supporting our students is our highest priority, and the university will strive to minimize service disruptions.”

FijiLive is currently awaiting a response from the Ministry of Employment.
