The USP Suva under-20 rugby team kicked off their campaign at the Fiji University Games with a narrow 10-7 victory over FNU West at the USP grounds in Suva. The team took the lead with tries scored by John Waqabaca and captain Matia Daoro.
Following a warm-down session after the match, Daoro expressed pride in how the team persevered through a challenging game that showcased impressive agility and skill from both sides. “The first half was very difficult; I simply told the boys to man up and play our very best,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of communication on the field, stating, “In the second half, we kept communicating, advising the forwards to work together to execute our game plan and secure a win for the team.” Daoro emphasized that effective communication is vital as they prepare for future matches, revealing a need to improve their defense.
In the conclusion of the rugby tournament, FNU Central triumphed over USP Suva, successfully defending their title in the men’s category. Similarly, in the women’s division, FNU Central emerged victorious against USP Suva with a 17-0 score. The Fiji University Games, previously known as the inter-tertiary competition, came to a close yesterday.
