USP Suva Triumphs in Thrilling University Rugby Opener

The USP Suva under-20 rugby team kicked off their Fiji University Games campaign with a narrow 10-7 victory over FNU West at the USP grounds in Suva. The home team secured their win with tries from John Waqabaca and captain Matia Daoro.

Following the match, Daoro reflected on the team’s performance, noting the intense nature of the game that showcased the agility and skill of both sides. He stated, “The first half was very difficult; I told the boys to man up and play our very best.”

In the second half, the players maintained strong communication on the field, with Daoro encouraging the forwards to collaborate effectively to implement their game plan and clinch the victory. He underscored the critical role of communication within the team moving forward, emphasizing, “We needed to work on our defence for the matches ahead.”

The rugby tournament concluded with FNU Central successfully defending their title in the men’s category by defeating USP Suva. In the women’s category, FNU Central emerged victorious against USP Suva, overpowering them with a 17-0 scoreline. The Fiji University Games, previously known as the inter-tertiary competition, wrapped up recently.
