USP Students Association Distances Itself from Staff Strike Confusion

The University of the South Pacific Students Association (USPSA) has clarified its position, stating that it is independent from the organizing bodies involved in the strike currently taking place at the Laucala campus, which is led by two staff unions.

Association President Christopher Siliva expressed concern over misinformation causing some members to consider joining the strike due to misleading and exaggerated claims, which have affected perceptions of the situation. He emphasized that while some individuals among the student body may personally support the strike, the association as a whole will maintain its distance.

Siliva also raised concerns regarding the demands of the Fiji-based staff unions, which include calls for the removal of the Vice-Chancellor and President. He indicated that such demands may not align with the legal guidelines set forth in the ordinance concerning the Vice-Chancellor at USP, potentially undermining the rule of law and affecting the interests of all members of the staff unions.

“It is crucial for all parties to adhere to established legal frameworks at USP to ensure fair and equitable outcomes,” Siliva stated.

Additionally, he highlighted the vital roles that all staff play within the university, but warned that the ongoing strike could disrupt classes, delay academic progress, and impede access to essential services that students depend on, especially with final examinations approaching.

Siliva concluded by urging for open dialogue, respect for differing opinions, and a continued dedication to educational objectives.
