The strike at the University of the South Pacific (USP) entered its third day, drawing support from students, faculty, and cleaning staff. The protest aims primarily at the removal of Vice Chancellor Professor Pal Ahluwalia, with additional issues such as the reinstatement of Professor Tamara Osborne-Naikatini and improved treatment of staff also being highlighted.
Krishnil Ram, the acting president of the Association for the University of the South Pacific Staff (AUSPS), emphasized that for many, the university is a significant part of their lives, prompting them to risk their jobs in advocating for a fair and transparent investigation into the Vice Chancellor.
The AUSPS is also pushing for gender equality, particularly concerned with the reinstatement of Dr. Tamara Osborne-Naikatini, the university’s only female professor before her removal. Ram pointed out that Dr. Tamara was dismissed for discussing a confidential matter with the media, stating that her role as a leading female researcher was vital in training other women in research. He expressed the challenge of bridging the gender gap if female voices are silenced when they raise concerns.
Ram urged council members to take the issues raised seriously during the strike, noting that staff confidence in senior management is waning, and there is a need for timely council meetings to address pressing matters.
Sources have indicated that the protests will continue until a definitive decision is reached regarding the fate of the USP Vice Chancellor.
