USP Strike: Students and Staff Unite for Change

The strike at the University of the South Pacific (USP) has entered its third day, with participation from students, faculty, and support staff. The acting president of the Association for the University of the South Pacific Staff (AUSPS), Krishnil Ram, has stated that the primary objective of the protest is the dismissal of Vice Chancellor Professor Pal Ahluwalia. Other concerns, including the reinstatement of Professor Tamara Osborne-Naikatini and improvements in staff treatment, are also significant issues highlighted during the strike.

Ram emphasized the personal connection many have to the university, noting that their commitment to the institution drives them to protest for a fair and transparent investigation into the Vice Chancellor’s actions.

The AUSPS is also advocating for gender equality within the university, particularly concerning the reinstatement of Dr. Tamara Osborne-Naikatini. Her removal was reportedly related to her speaking with the media about an issue deemed confidential, and Ram criticized the decision, highlighting the need for female representation and mentorship in academia.

Ram is calling on council members to address the concerns raised by staff and students. He warned that faith in senior management is waning, and urgent attention is needed to the delays in council meetings and other critical matters.

Sources indicate that the protest will continue until a resolution regarding the Vice Chancellor’s position is reached.
