USP Strike Drama: Will Students Face Exam Chaos?

Protests at the University of the South Pacific continue as students prepare for upcoming examinations, raising concerns about their potential impact on academic schedules.

Krishnil Ram, the Acting President of the Association for the University of the South Pacific Staff (AUSPS), stated in an interview that the ongoing strike by professors and tutors has led to the postponement of lectures for several units.

Josaia Lacanivalu, a final-year student studying Environmental Management, expressed the urgency of reaching a resolution to allow classes to resume in time for exams. Lacanivalu emphasized the necessity of conducting revisions, which will be hindered if lecturers remain on strike.

He also urged the chair of the USP Students Association to ensure transparent decision-making processes, indicating a lack of communication in recent times. “Students need to be informed before any decisions are made, as the association exists to serve us,” he noted.

Ram acknowledged that while the strike is affecting students, faculty members have been making efforts to minimize disruptions. He mentioned that some staff choose to secretly return to teach students, demonstrating their commitment to the students’ education.

As over 150 USP staff members remain on strike, there is a glimmer of hope as the first round of negotiations with the university council commenced.
