USP Staff Unite in Protest: Will Leadership Crisis Escalate?

The University of the South Pacific has not yet addressed the demands put forth by two Staff Unions seeking the immediate removal of Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia. The strike initiated by members of the Association of the University of the South Pacific Staff and the USP Staff Union is ongoing.

Last Friday, more than 200 staff members protested outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office, calling for his resignation in light of unresolved issues related to his leadership, including significant governance concerns and the recent dismissal of AUSPS President Dr. Tamara Osbourne-Naikatini.

In response to the strike, USP plans to pursue legal action against the decision made by the Permanent Secretary of Employment concerning the protest. The university has warned striking staff that they will not receive pay for the duration of the protest.

Currently, Professor Pal Ahluwalia is reported to be out of the country.
