The University of the South Pacific (USP) is making significant strides in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) impact rankings, which assess how well universities worldwide contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). USP has notably advanced in two critical areas: SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Additionally, the university sustained strong performances in other key areas, including SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

In the latest rankings, USP has climbed to the 801–1000 band among 2,318 institutions assessed globally, marking an increase of over 350 universities from the previous year. Professor Pal Ahluwalia, Vice-Chancellor and President of USP, expressed pride in this achievement, which he attributes to the collective efforts of the university’s staff, researchers, and students.

He emphasized that the rankings underscore USP’s growing influence on education, sustainability, and regional development, aligning with its strategic objectives under the 2050 Blue Pacific Strategy. Professor Ahluwalia also pointed out the establishment of the new Centre for Sustainable Futures (CSF) at USP, which is dedicated to addressing pressing issues such as ocean health and climate change.

“While we celebrate this milestone, our commitment to advancing the SDGs through research, innovation, and robust partnerships remains steadfast,” stated Professor Ahluwalia.

This progress not only highlights USP’s role as a critical educational institution in the Pacific but also reflects broader regional efforts to achieve sustainable development. By focusing on areas such as climate change and sustainable practices, USP is poised to make a positive impact on both local and global scales.

Overall, USP’s accomplishments in the 2025 rankings represent hope and promise for the future, underlining the importance of education and collaboration in meeting global challenges.
