The Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of the South Pacific (USP), Professor Pal Ahluwalia, proposed to resign from his role during the university’s 98th Council meeting, which took place in Rarotonga, Cook Islands, last month. According to credible sources, the Council has recommended the appointment of an interim Vice-Chancellor, the negotiation of conditions, and the organization of a special council meeting to finalize transitional arrangements by the end of January.

In a statement released by USP, the university clarified that the allegations concerning the events of the 98th Council meeting were inaccurate. They also indicated that an official statement addressing the outcomes of the meeting would be provided in the near future.

Recently, the university announced Siosiua Tuitalukua Tupou Utoikamanu’s appointment as the new Pro-Chancellor and chair of the Council, effective from November 27, 2024, and lasting for three years.

Concerns have been expressed by USP Alumni representative Associate Professor Morgan Tuimalealiifano regarding the delayed issuance of press releases. He emphasized that such delays are troubling and could undermine the university’s ability to remain competitive and progressive within the Pacific Islands context. Tuimalealiifano urged USP management to ensure that Pacific Islands taxpayers and fee-paying students are kept informed about critical decisions affecting their university’s advancement, particularly in light of the ongoing strike action mandate from USP unions.

Overall, the situation at the University of the South Pacific reflects the challenges faced by academic institutions in maintaining transparent communication with their stakeholders. Stakeholders’ concerns about timely updates underscore the importance of transparency and accountability in governance, which could ultimately lead to a more robust and responsive university environment. Moving forward, there is hope that the university will address these issues effectively, fostering a culture of openness and collaboration for its community.
