USP Leadership Crisis: Staff Demand Resignation Amid Protests

The Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of the South Pacific (USP), Professor Pal Ahluwalia, is facing renewed calls for his resignation from staff unions. The University of the South Pacific Staff Union (USPSU) and the President of the University Association of USP Staff (AUSPS) have organized protests at USP’s Laucala Campus, demanding his immediate removal.

Union representatives argue that his leadership has been ineffective and are urging the university’s Special Council to investigate management and human resources concerns that have arisen during his administration. This situation is notable as many of the protesting staff had previously supported Professor Ahluwalia’s return to Fiji after his controversial deportation by the former government.

The enthusiasm that welcomed him back has now transformed into widespread frustration. A significant issue of contention is the dismissal of biologist Dr. Tamara Osborne-Naikatini, a former AUSPS president, who was terminated from her position in July following an interview with Islands Business. Professor Ahluwalia labeled her actions as a breach of contract confidentiality, citing “gross misconduct.”

The strike has led to class disruptions, with some students discovering empty classrooms and being unaware of the ongoing situation. The unions have also voiced anger over reports suggesting that Professor Ahluwalia is currently on holiday overseas amidst the unfolding crisis, raising further concerns about his leadership capabilities.

Additionally, government ministers have not publicly addressed the issue. Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro has not replied to inquiries, nor has Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh provided a comment. Their silence has prompted many to question the government’s stance on this escalating conflict.

As the university grapples with staff discontent and operational challenges, attention will be focused on USP’s management and their response to these serious allegations in hopes of restoring stability to the institution.
