The University of the South Pacific (USP) Council has initiated the search for its new Vice-Chancellor and President, a decision reached during a confidential session at the council’s 99th meeting held in Auckland, New Zealand, from May 19 to 21. This marks a pivotal moment for the university, as a Joint Committee comprising Council and Senate members has been established to oversee the recruitment process.

Pro-Chancellor and council chair Siosiua ‘Utoikamanu emphasized that this gathering represented “a time of reset” for the regional university, allowing members to engage in critical reflection about the institution’s future and mission. Utoikamanu urged members to contemplate their commitment to the university, asking, “Do we still believe in this regional university? And if we do, what are we prepared to do to ensure it thrives in the years ahead?”

In addition to leadership matters, the council approved USP’s audited financial statements for 2024 and sanctioned salary adjustments for staff at campuses in Tonga, Samoa, and the Solomon Islands. Furthermore, the council endorsed the introduction of a new Bachelor of Arts degree in Language Technology, showcasing the institution’s ongoing commitment to expanding its academic offerings.

Closing the meeting, Utoikamanu highlighted the urgent need for decisive action. “Council has reaffirmed its belief in USP. But belief alone is not enough,” he stated. He called for courage, clarity, and unity in confronting the challenges ahead.

The current transition in leadership comes at a crucial time for USP, especially following discussions surrounding the previous Vice-Chancellor, Professor Pal Ahluwalia, who had offered to resign. The ongoing dialogue emphasizes a renewed focus on robust governance and transparency within the institution, aiming to restore confidence among stakeholders and alumni.

Overall, this phase presents USP with an opportunity to reinforce its mission and strengthen connections with its community. By committing to effective governance and open communication, USP can emerge from this transition poised for renewed effectiveness in its role as a leading educational institution in the Pacific Islands.
