The University of the South Pacific (USP) has paid heartfelt tribute to the late Mr. Filipe Jitoko, honoring him as a significant figure in Pacific education. Mr. Jitoko served as a former Permanent Secretary for Education and was a cherished member of the USP community, whose contributions greatly influenced both national and regional education systems.
In an official obituary, USP expressed deep sorrow over Mr. Jitoko’s passing, recognizing his remarkable service to education not only in Fiji but also across the Pacific region. Throughout his tenure, he was pivotal as the Coordinator of the Pacific Regional Education Framework (PacREF) Facilitating Unit, hosted at USP from 2018 until his death.
Mr. Jitoko’s leadership during this transformative time in regional education was crucial, as he guided PacREF—an initiative of collective commitment among Pacific nations aimed at enhancing educational outcomes for future generations. The university noted that his extensive experience as Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Education allowed him to effectively connect national education priorities with broader regional goals, fostering collaboration among Pacific governments, development partners, and educational stakeholders.
The tribute stated, “His national leadership experience profoundly enriched his regional contribution, allowing him to unite diverse interests behind a common educational vision for the Pacific.” Mr. Jitoko’s commitment aligned with USP’s values of regional cooperation, academic excellence, and service, helping to cultivate a culture of collaboration, accountability, and trust that continues to influence the PacREF Facilitating Unit’s efforts.
In remembrance of Mr. Jitoko, a requiem mass is scheduled for Monday, 12 January 2026, at his residence in Dromatalia, Nakasi, followed by his funeral service on Tuesday, 13 January 2026, at 9:00 AM at the Dromatalia Methodist Church.
