The University of the South Pacific (USP) Council is scheduled to convene later this month in the Cook Islands to address allegations against Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro confirmed that the Council will also establish the ‘Terms of Reference’ for the investigation during this meeting.
In addition to discussing the allegations, the Council is expected to clarify the position of the Pro-Chancellor of the university, currently being filled on an acting basis by Dr. Heila Heine. Minister Radrodro noted that the first round of voting regarding the Pro-Chancellor’s position has already concluded, with a second round set to follow soon.
“This is something that all council members are waiting on,” Radrodro stated, emphasizing the importance of guidance from the Acting Pro-Chancellor, the Secretariat, and legal advisors regarding the appointment status.
This upcoming Council meeting represents a critical step towards transparency and accountability within the university’s administration. By addressing the allegations and voting on the Pro-Chancellor’s position, the USP aims to strengthen its governance and restore confidence among its stakeholders.
As a hopeful note, the proactive engagement of the Council and the Education Minister underscores a commitment to upholding the university’s standards and fostering a positive environment for all members of the academic community.
