The University of the South Pacific (USP) Council is set to reconvene today to tackle various concerns regarding human resource decisions and processes at the institution. One potential outcome of this meeting is the initiation of an independent review into these matters.

Emeritus Professor Pat Walsh, who serves as both Pro-Chancellor and Acting Chair of the Council, has indicated that the Council will also address the urgent need for appointing a University Visitor, a position that has remained vacant since May 2022. The Council has highlighted the importance of this role, as the Visitor acts as the final authority for internal disputes within USP, according to the prescribed duties outlined in the USP Charter.

Despite facing challenges in identifying suitable candidates for the University Visitor role, the Council is actively urging member countries to suggest potential individuals for consideration. They will also be evaluating the terms and conditions surrounding this position to enhance the appeal for quality candidates.

In addition to these discussions, the findings related to human resource decision-making will also be presented at the meeting, which is currently taking place in the Cook Islands.

This meeting marks a significant opportunity for the USP Council to address pressing concerns and move towards strengthening the governance and operational efficiency of the university. The commitment to an independent review reflects a proactive approach to transparency and accountability, promising a hopeful path forward for the institution.
