The University of the South Pacific (USP) Council is scheduled to convene later this month in the Cook Islands to address allegations involving Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro confirmed the meeting and mentioned that the Council will establish the ‘Terms of Reference’ for the ongoing investigation.
In addition to addressing the allegations, the Council will also confirm the status of the Pro-Chancellor position, which is currently held by Dr. Heila Heine on an acting basis. Minister Radrodro noted that while the first round of voting for the Pro-Chancellor has already been conducted, a second round is expected to occur soon.
Radrodro emphasized that all members of the Council, including the Acting Pro-Chancellor and the Secretariat, are eager for legal advice regarding the appointment of the Pro-Chancellor to clarify the situation.
This meeting presents an opportunity for the USP Council to restore confidence in its leadership and governance. By addressing these concerns transparently, they can continue building a stronger foundation for the university’s future. It is a crucial step that emphasizes the importance of accountability in educational institutions.
In summary, the upcoming USP Council meeting will aim to tackle critical issues surrounding leadership within the university and work towards reinforcing its governance structure amidst ongoing investigations.
