The University of the South Pacific Council is set to convene today to tackle important issues surrounding human resource decisions and processes at the institution, which includes initiating an independent review. Pro-Chancellor and Acting Chair Emeritus Professor Pat Walsh has indicated that the Council will also aim to appoint a University Visitor during this meeting.

The Council has expressed concern regarding the long-standing vacancy of the University Visitor position, which has remained unfilled since May 2022. This role, as outlined by the USP Charter, serves as the highest authority for addressing internal disputes within the University.

Recognizing the challenges in securing suitable candidates for this crucial position, the Council has encouraged its member countries to propose potential candidates. Additionally, they plan to evaluate the terms and conditions associated with the Visitor role to attract talented individuals.

Importantly, the findings regarding the human resource decisions and processes are expected to be presented during the Council’s meeting, which is currently taking place in the Cook Islands.

This meeting presents an opportunity for the USP Council to reinforce its governance structures and improve internal processes, ultimately aiming to enhance the overall functioning of the University. It is a chance for collaboration and positive changes that could lead to a stronger academic environment for its students and staff. The ongoing discussions also highlight the Council’s commitment to transparency and accountability, key components for building trust within the University community.
