The University of the South Pacific (USP) Council is scheduled to convene later this month in the Cook Islands to address allegations against Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro confirmed this information, stating that the council will also establish the ‘Terms of Reference’ for the investigation into the allegations.
Additionally, the meeting aims to clarify the status of the Pro-Chancellor of the university. Currently, Dr. Heila Heine is serving as the Acting Pro-Chancellor. Minister Radrodro noted that the first round of voting regarding the appointment has already been conducted, with a second round anticipated soon.
Radrodro remarked, “This is something that all council members are waiting on, the Acting Pro-Chancellor, the Secretariat together with the legal advice to inform members on the status of the appointment of Pro-Chancellor.”
This upcoming meeting presents an opportunity for the council to address ongoing concerns, ensuring that governance at the university remains strong and transparent. The involvement of legal advice indicates a commitment to due process, which may help restore confidence in the institution’s leadership.
The outcomes of the council meeting could lead to clearer policies and procedures within the university, paving the way for a more stable and effective administration moving forward.
