The United States has announced a funding contribution of $4.9 million (approximately F$11.1 million) to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). This announcement was made by U.S. Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin during a joint press conference held at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort in Nadi.
The funding aims to bolster Fiji’s military modernization initiatives through improved foreign military financing, subject to congressional approval. During a bilateral meeting with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Secretary Austin highlighted discussions around various security challenges facing the Pacific region.
He emphasized the importance of maritime security, revealing that the first delivery of rigid inflatable boats to Fiji is expected in the coming months. Additionally, a new boat ramp will be provided to enhance maritime surveillance capabilities. Austin also noted the intention to expand joint military exercises and collaborations, including the annual Pacific exercise and partnership with the Nevada National Guard.
While attempts to reach RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai for comment were unsuccessful, this development reflects a significant commitment from the U.S. to strengthen security cooperation in the Pacific.
This collaboration signifies a positive step towards ensuring stability and security in the region while fostering stronger ties between the United States and Fiji. Such partnerships can help build resilience against emerging threats, contributing to the overall safety and well-being of Pacific nations.
In summary, the U.S. has pledged significant funding to support Fiji’s military efforts, indicating a commitment to enhancing regional security and cooperation.
