As soft carols filled the air and homes across Suva buzzed with holiday cheer, one family experienced a heartwarming surprise that will stay with them for a lifetime. Just hours before Christmas Day, Ashneel Prakash walked through his family’s door after years of living abroad, transforming a regular festive evening into an emotional reunion.
Serving in the US Army and stationed in Hawaii, the Suva-born soldier orchestrated his return without alerting his parents or siblings. His unexpected arrival on Christmas Eve sparked tears of joy, laughter, and hugs, embodying the essence of Christmas—family, love, and togetherness.
“I’m here with my son and wife, and it’s great to be back for Christmas. Being reunited with family to celebrate the holiday means so much,” he expressed. Living far from home has meant missing out on precious moments. “When I’m back in mainland US, I miss my family. The usual traditions we have, like lovo, I used to miss that. It’s always great to be surrounded by family, receiving a warm welcome, and simply being back at home,” Ashneel reflected.
His last visit to Fiji was in 2023, after having been in the US since 2017. Comparing the festive seasons, he highlighted the stark contrast: “In the US, it’s mostly winter, while Christmas in Fiji feels like summer. I prefer spending time with family outdoors, which is why I enjoy a summer Christmas in Fiji more.”
In the spirit of the season, he imparted a heartfelt message: “Enjoy responsibly. You work for it. Don’t let anything spoil it and have empathy for those who are less fortunate around you. Help them with whatever you can and enjoy.”
With Ashneel’s return, his family celebrated not just a holiday, but the powerful bond that love and family can create, reminding everyone of what truly matters during the festive season.
