The Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has stated that the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) report for Nabua Primary School is still pending. A visit was conducted at the school on November 4, and the report was initially expected to be released the following day. However, despite repeated inquiries, there has been no further action from the Ministry regarding the report.
Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro also voiced concerns about the troubling conditions at the school. He noted that students are being exposed to hazardous environments due to incomplete and poorly maintained buildings, remnants of past management failures. “From the initial information we received, the building constructed under previous management was left unfinished,” Mr. Radrodro stated. He emphasized that efforts are underway with the new management to find the most effective way to complete the structure.
Moreover, the Minister recommended that the school formally approaches the government through the Ministry of Education for any necessary assistance. The situation is alarming, with substantial structural damage observed in most classrooms, including rusted roofs and significant gaps where window panes are missing. These hazardous conditions not only jeopardize student safety but also pose potential escape routes for pupils.
The deteriorating state of Nabua Primary School, which impacts over 900 students, underscores a more extensive issue regarding the declining infrastructure of public education in urban areas. This situation calls for urgent attention and collaborative efforts to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.
In a hopeful turn, the acknowledgment of these issues by both ministers suggests a pathway towards potential improvements and the opportunity for a renewed focus on public education infrastructure. It presents a moment for community advocacy and government commitment to creating safer educational settings for future generations.
