The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission is urging for heightened measures to ensure the protection and accountability of LGBTQIA+ rights in Fiji. During the observance of International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia 2025, Commission Director Loukinikini Lewaravu emphasized that while constitutional protections exist, they are not reflected in the everyday experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Lewaravu expressed concern over ongoing reports of discrimination, exclusion, and violence against LGBTQIA+ individuals, despite legal safeguards outlined in Section 26(3)(a) of the Constitution. In particular, she highlighted the unresolved case of a 19-year-old member of the LGBTQIA+ community who was allegedly murdered in Lautoka last year, urging authorities to investigate this incident thoroughly as it may represent a hate crime that cannot be overlooked.
This year’s theme, “The Power of Communities,” calls for collaboration among all stakeholders, including government institutions, advocacy groups, families, and local leaders. Lewaravu remarked that genuine progress hinges on the collective efforts of all Fijians to uphold the dignity and rights of individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
These calls for action align with previous statements from the Commission highlighting systemic human rights issues in Fiji, including the need for immediate action against discrimination faced by various marginalized groups, including LGBTQIA+ individuals, women, and children. The Commission’s ongoing advocacy works towards fostering a safer and more inclusive society, reflecting a commitment to effecting meaningful change across the nation.
The collective desire for a more equitable and just Fiji is palpable, as officials and community leaders mobilize to create a society where every individual’s rights are respected and upheld. This unwavering commitment to human rights underlines a hopeful vision for a future where diversity is celebrated, contributing to community resilience and growth.
