Residents of the Nabua Muslim League settlement in Suva are preparing for a difficult Christmas as they face an eviction notice requiring them to vacate their homes by December 28. Turaga ni koro (village headman) Karalo Naituki, who has lived in the settlement for 34 years, expressed deep concern over the impending move, stating, “We have no place to move to, so what can we do? We’ll just stay here and see what happens next.”
The residents are struggling with the emotional toll of potentially leaving behind their homes, which they have invested in over the years. Mr. Naituki has reached out to the government for assistance in their relocation efforts, having delivered a letter to the Prime Minister outlining their plight.
Anita Kumar, a long-time resident of 40 years, echoed Mr. Naituki’s feelings, stating that this Christmas has stripped away their joy, leaving only sadness. She has also called on the government for help to find a safe place for her community.
This situation highlights the struggles faced by communities as they confront the challenges posed by housing insecurity. The residents’ appeals to the government underscore the importance of support for vulnerable populations facing unexpected relocations.
In the midst of these challenges, there is hope for a positive outcome as community members band together to advocate for their needs. Their unity and resilience may inspire action and compassion from local authorities, ultimately leading to a solution that ensures their well-being this holiday season.
