The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force are stepping up their efforts to improve road safety by deploying additional traffic patrols and setting up checkpoints at high-risk areas and accident-prone intersections. This initiative comes in response to a serious traffic accident that occurred yesterday afternoon in Vitogo on Kings Road, where a bus collided with a twin cab utility vehicle, resulting in 18 people being hospitalized at Lautoka Hospital.
Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Filipe Tuisawau, expressed his condolences to those affected by the accident and emphasized the urgent need for all road users to be vigilant and strictly adhere to road safety regulations. He underscored that the National Joint Operations Order between the LTA, Fiji Police, and Municipal Council enforcement officers is designed to enhance overall road safety, reduce road fatalities, and ensure compliance with traffic laws.
The launch of this joint operation is particularly timely, as it coincides with the festive season, a period known for increased road traffic due to holiday activities, family gatherings, and celebrations. The operation will run from November 1 to January 31 of the following year, addressing a crucial concern for ensuring safer roads during this busy time.
As a positive sign, the number of road fatalities has decreased this year, with 51 recorded as of November 11 compared to 71 during the same period last year. This decline reflects the potential effectiveness of road safety measures being implemented.
This proactive approach signifies a commitment to road safety and the well-being of all road users, as the authorities work together to create a safer driving environment during the upcoming festive season.
