Lawyers representing former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum have requested an urgent hearing from the High Court due to serious health concerns following his recent stroke and ongoing heart condition. Medical evaluations indicate that Sayed-Khaiyum requires immediate attention that is unavailable in Fiji.
Gul Fatima, one of Sayed-Khaiyum’s attorneys, conveyed to the court that a medical report was submitted on Tuesday, revealing the necessity for urgent tests and treatments. Despite this urgency, the High Court informed the legal team that the hearing would not occur until Monday, August 4. Fatima highlighted the pressing nature of her client’s condition, expressing concerns that without immediate intervention, Sayed-Khaiyum could suffer another medical episode with potentially fatal consequences.
Recent reports indicate that members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) visited Sayed-Khaiyum at the hospital, seeking to speak with him, raising additional concerns about his constitutional rights during such a vulnerable time. Despite these challenges, the registry has instructed both parties to submit their documents for a general review on the rescheduled court date.
This situation mirrors earlier instances where Sayed-Khaiyum has faced legal delays due to health complications. His previous hospitalizations have prompted a compassionate response from the court, reflecting an understanding of the importance of health considerations in legal proceedings. As highlighted in earlier articles, there is a shared hope among his family, legal team, and the court for Sayed-Khaiyum’s rapid recovery, which would enable him to effectively confront the serious charges he faces, including allegations of abuse of office.
Amidst these challenges, the priority given to Sayed-Khaiyum’s health is a reminder of the judicial system’s commitment to balancing legal matters with essential medical care, instilling a sense of hope that he will soon be well enough to address his legal situation.
