The Divisional Commissioner for the Western Division, Apolosi Lewaqai, has announced that efforts are underway to distribute food rations to 61 families currently residing in evacuation centers. The distribution is specifically concentrated in Nadi and aims to assist those sheltered at Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group Office.
Lewaqai confirmed that the distribution of food rations is guided by protocols which stipulate that evacuees receive provisions within 48 hours following their evacuation. Teams are actively preparing these food packages, with the goal of completing their distribution within the day.
In addition to food distribution, teams are also assessing the damage in the area, including evaluating residential properties and monitoring water levels. While the Western Division is enjoying sunny weather at present, meteorological officials have warned of potential rainfall due to a band of clouds anticipated to linger over the country for several days.
Lewaqai urged residents to take necessary precautions while undertaking cleanup activities in their homes, recommending the use of protective gear, particularly sturdy shoes. He also encouraged the public to reach out to Ministry of Health staff for advice and assistance related to public health concerns.
Emergency operations centers remain active as forecasts suggest continued rainfall throughout the weekend. Relevant agencies have been briefed on the preliminary damage assessments, and a comprehensive evaluation is planned to determine the level of aid required by the affected communities.
This proactive approach not only addresses immediate food security needs but also emphasizes the importance of community safety and health in recovery efforts. By collaborating with health officials and local organizations, the Western Division is demonstrating resilience and a commitment to supporting its citizens in the aftermath of recent disruptions.
