The Divisional Commissioner for Western Fiji, Apolosi Lewaqai, has announced that efforts are underway to distribute food rations to 61 families currently residing in evacuation centers. The distribution efforts are focused primarily in Nadi, targeting locations such as Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group Office.

According to Lewaqai, the guidelines stipulate that food rations are provided to evacuees 48 hours post-evacuation, and teams are working diligently to prepare and distribute these packages today. In addition to food distribution, assessment teams are on-site evaluating the situation, including checking homes and monitoring residual water levels in the area.

Although the weather in the Western Division is sunny at present, Lewaqai highlighted that the Fiji Meteorological Service has warned of potential rain in the coming days due to a band of clouds moving across the region. As such, he urged the public to take necessary precautions, such as wearing protective gear, particularly sturdy shoes while cleaning their properties.

Furthermore, he encouraged residents to seek assistance from Ministry of Health personnel, who are available to support the public health efforts in the community. Lewaqai assured that emergency operations centers will remain operational, especially with continuous rainfall expected over the weekend. He also noted that all relevant agencies have been briefed about the initial damage assessments, which will guide the level of assistance needed for affected communities.

This proactive response highlights the community’s resilience and dedication to overcoming challenges posed by natural disasters. As efforts to assist those in need continue, the unity and cooperation among various agencies and the community stand as a beacon of hope during these trying times.

Summary: Divisional Commissioner Apolosi Lewaqai reports ongoing food distribution efforts for 61 families in evacuation centers in Nadi, Fiji. As teams prepare rations and assess damage, residents are urged to take precautions due to expected rain. The community’s resilience shines as support continues for those affected.
