The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) has issued an urgent advisory for residents in Fiji to evacuate during daylight hours if necessary. Since December 25, 2024, the country has been experiencing substantial rainfall due to a prolonged trough of low pressure, which continues to impact the northeastern regions. Additionally, a new Tropical Disturbance, identified as 01F, is situated approximately 152 km West-Northwest of Yasawa-l-Rara, expected to bring further rainfall and potentially affect the Fiji Group until later Monday.
The NDRMO highlights that the persistent rains have led to increased soil saturation, raising the risks of landslips and landslides. They are urging drivers to remain cautious and take necessary precautions while on the roads. Furthermore, there is a warning in place about the possibility of flash floods, and the public is encouraged to prepare accordingly, including considering evacuation if conditions worsen.
If residents need to move to an Evacuation Centre, they are advised to bring emergency kits that can sustain their families for at least two days. For those needing assistance with evacuation, contacting the Fiji Police at 917 is recommended.
This proactive communication from the NDRMO emphasizes the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of adverse weather conditions. By adhering to these guidelines and remaining informed, communities can work together to minimize risks and protect lives during this challenging time.
