Urgent Evacuation Warning as Tropical Disturbance Looms Over Fiji

The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) has issued a critical warning for residents, urging evacuation while there is still daylight. This recommendation comes as Fiji grapples with significant rainfall tied to a slow-moving trough of low pressure that has persisted since December 25, 2024, particularly impacting the Northeastern regions of the country.

In addition to these conditions, another Tropical Disturbance, identified as [01F], is currently situated about 152 km West-Northwest of Yasawa-l-Rara and is expected to exacerbate rainfall activities across Fiji until late Monday.

Due to the continuous rain leading to increased soil saturation, the risk of landslips and landslides has risen. The NDRMO has stressed the importance of caution, advising motorists to remain alert and exercise additional care while traveling.

The organization also warned of potential flash floods and encouraged the public to remain prepared, including the necessity of evacuating during daylight hours if the situation arises. Those heading to Evacuation Centres are reminded to bring emergency kits that can support their families for at least two days. For those needing assistance with evacuation, contacting the Fiji Police at 917 is advised.

This proactive approach underscores the importance of community safety and preparedness during times of natural disasters. The NDRMO’s clear guidance on evacuating while daylight remains enhances the chances of ensuring safety for families in affected regions. As Fiji braces for adverse weather, community cooperation and preparedness will be vital in navigating these challenges.
