The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) is urging residents to evacuate during daylight hours due to worsening weather conditions in Fiji. Since December 25th, the country has been affected by heavy rainfall from a slow-moving trough of low pressure, particularly impacting the northeastern regions. Adding to the concern, a Tropical Disturbance (TD01F) is located approximately 152 kilometers west-northwest of Yasawa-l-Rara, which is expected to bring further rainfall to the area until later Monday.

In light of the continuous rain, soil saturation has heightened the risk of landslips and landslides. The NDRMO advises motorists to stay alert and exercise caution on the roads. In their warning, they emphasized the potential for flash floods and called on the community to adhere to preparedness measures, especially the importance of evacuating while it is still light outside if necessary.

For those needing to relocate to an Evacuation Centre, the NDRMO recommends bringing emergency kits with essential supplies to support families for a minimum of two days. Residents needing assistance with evacuation are urged to reach out to the Fiji Police at 917 for help.

This proactive communication from the NDRMO highlights the importance of safety and preparedness, reminding the community to take the threat of natural disasters seriously while providing resources for assistance. It fosters a sense of community responsibility in handling emergencies.

As the situation develops, it’s critical for people to stay informed and adhere to the guidance provided by local authorities for their safety and well-being.
