The Fiji Police Force has issued a warning to parents and caregivers to be alert regarding the safety of their children following a heartbreaking incident in Navosa. On March 9, 2025, a one-year-old boy suffered severe burns affecting over 50% of his body after he came into contact with a hot pot left on the floor. The child initially received treatment at Navosa Hospital and is currently being cared for at Lautoka Aspen Hospital.

Authorities have launched an investigation to explore whether negligence played a role in this tragic event. In their statement, the Fiji Police emphasized the critical importance of identifying and reducing potential safety hazards in homes to protect young children from preventable injuries.

This incident is not isolated; it highlights ongoing concerns regarding child safety in Fiji. A recent case involved a different one-year-old boy who tragically lost his life after wandering onto a road and getting struck by a vehicle. These incidents underscore the urgent need for vigilant oversight of children. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has reiterated that accidents can occur in the blink of an eye and has called upon families to remain vigilant concerning their children’s whereabouts.

Moreover, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran has urged parents to raise their awareness of child safety, recognizing the challenges particularly in urban environments. Such efforts point towards a community commitment to enhancing the safety of children and preventing future tragedies.

Through concerted awareness and a focus on careful supervision, there is optimism that similar incidents can be avoided, fostering a safer space for children in Fiji to explore, play, and grow with reduced risks.
