Authorities are facing intensified calls to tackle the ongoing problem of illegal taxi services, commonly referred to as “pirate taxis,” following a distressing incident involving a Virgin Australia airline crew member who was allegedly raped and assaulted in Nadi on New Year’s morning.
A man in his twenties, reportedly a farmer, has been charged with one count each of rape and sexual assault related to this case and is expected to appear in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court today.
The incident reportedly took place after the victim, after leaving a nightclub in Martintar, accepted a ride from an unregistered taxi operator. In a similar vein, another airline crew member was also victimized after being misdirected by a group of young men who later mugged and assaulted him.
Ashwin Lal, the general secretary of the Fiji Taxi Association, raised alarms about the dangers posed by illicit taxi operations, stating they are a significant threat to public safety. “We have consistently urged the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to take stronger action against illegal taxi operators, but progress has been minimal,” Mr. Lal lamented. He asserted that ensuring only licensed drivers are operating is critical for public safety.
Mr. Lal stressed that such incidents could negatively impact Fiji’s reputation as a tourist destination, particularly around Nadi Airport, where many visitors depend on taxi services. He cautioned both locals and tourists against using unregistered transport options, as these drivers lack the necessary training and qualifications to provide safe services.
The LTA had previously cautioned private vehicle owners against offering unauthorized Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operations. Its CEO, Irimaia Rokosawa, pointed out that these activities remain unlawful and emphasized that passengers share a degree of responsibility. “By paying pirate taxi operators, passengers are part of the problem. If demand ceases, the supply will too,” he stated.
To address rising security issues, police have heightened patrols in and around Nadi’s nightclub neighborhoods, including Martintar. Mr. Lal has called for firmer enforcement against illegal taxi services, noting that licensed taxi drivers suffer due to the operation of pirate taxis, while the public remains at risk. He concluded, “This issue is longstanding. It’s time for decisive action to protect lives and livelihoods.”
