The United Nations Special Representative on Violence Against Children, Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid, has delivered a compelling message to the Fijian Government, stressing the immediate need for action to address a child protection crisis. Following her recent visit to Fiji for the Child Wellbeing Summit in Suva, she urged swift and coordinated responses to serious issues surrounding rising school dropouts, increasing drug use, and the alarming spread of pornography among children.
“The time for talk is over. Now is the time for bold, decisive action,” Dr. M’jid stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation. She recognized the gap between existing laws and their implementation, calling for enhanced coordination among all stakeholders—governments, civil society, and religious groups—to combat violence, abuse, and neglect affecting children.
Recent statistics from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) reported that in 2023 alone, there were 242 victims of rape and sexual offenses, with 153 being under the age of 18. Disturbingly, actions often occurred in familiar contexts: 146 cases involved domestic relationships. These figures underscore the pressing need for robust child protection strategies and adequate funding for effective initiatives.
Dr. M’jid praised the efforts of Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, describing her as an “action-oriented leader.” But she emphasized that improving child protection mandates the involvement of various societal sectors working in unison. Clear accountability, defined roles, and an approach that includes community voices are essential for effective change.
To truly impact child welfare, Dr. M’jid cautioned that funding must align with action-oriented policies. She called for resources to prioritize trained professionals in schools and rehabilitation centers who can identify and address the issues affecting children. Additionally, focusing on community engagement ensures that strategies are relevant and effective at the grassroots level.
This initiative has been echoed by critical discussions around the increase in reported cases of child sexual abuse and the need for improved reporting mechanisms and support systems for affected children. There is a collective recognition among government officials and international bodies of the significance of fostering a protective environment for Fiji’s youth.
The call for immediate action illustrates a hopeful aspiration for the youth of Fiji, with the commitment to work collaboratively, recognizing that a brighter future is achievable through united efforts. As stakeholders come together to address the pressing challenges, there lies a profound opportunity to safeguard and uplift the nation’s children, ultimately aiming for a society free from violence and exploitation.
