President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on the paramount chief of Naitasiri, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, to take immediate steps to safeguard his community from the escalating illicit drug issue. He voiced his concerns regarding the rising prevalence of drug use nationwide.

Ratu Wiliame made these remarks during the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held at Tamavua Village in Suva yesterday. He emphasized the importance of collaboration for the advancement of the province. “The vanua needs to work alongside the youth and the community to tackle the widespread social problems affecting our society,” he stated.

The President expressed his worries about the harmful impacts of drugs on young individuals, noting the urgency of protecting current and future generations. He stressed the need for unity among the vanua and the church to safeguard children. He further highlighted the significance of reinforcing cultural values and respect for elders within families and communities.

Ratu Wiliame also urged the Naitasiri population to encourage school leavers to pursue technical education, which can help them overcome societal challenges and contribute to community development. “We must not shift responsibility to others. It is essential for us to confront and resolve this issue,” he remarked.

He proposed a comprehensive village profiling initiative aimed at assisting the government in delivering targeted support for the people of Naitasiri. Additionally, he called on the community to combat Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by embracing healthier dietary choices.

“The Ministry of Health has noted that 80 percent of deaths are linked to NCDs. We must reflect on our contributions as a province to mitigate this problem,” Ratu Wiliame added. He urged everyone to consider the lifestyle and dietary habits of their ancestors, advocating for the consumption of locally grown food.
