President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on Naitasiri’s paramount chief, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, to take strong measures to safeguard his community against the escalating illicit drug crisis. He voiced his anxiety regarding the rising prevalence of drug use throughout the nation.
Ratu Wiliame made these remarks while inaugurating the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting at Tamavua Village in Suva yesterday.
“It is essential for everyone to collaborate for the improvement of the province. The vanua must work with youths and the community to tackle the extensive social issues troubling our society,” emphasized Ratu Wiliame.
He expressed his alarming observations about the harmful impact of drugs on the youth, stating that he is profoundly worried about both current and future generations. “It is crucial for us to come together and ensure that the vanua and the church unite to protect our children.”
He highlighted the significance of reinforcing cultural values and respect within families and communities so that children learn to honor their elders.
Ratu Wiliame also urged the Naitasiri community to motivate young people who have left school to enroll in technical schools, as this could help them overcome social challenges and contribute to local progress. “We cannot blame others; it is our responsibility to confront these issues,” he asserted.
“There is a necessity for a detailed village profile initiative to assist the Government in providing targeted aid that will benefit the people of Naitasiri,” he added.
Additionally, he encouraged the community to fight against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by embracing healthier dietary practices. “The Ministry of Health has reported that 80 percent of deaths are attributed to NCDs. We should consider what actions we can take as a province to address this matter,” Ratu Wiliame cautioned.
“I urge everyone to reflect on the lifestyle and dietary habits of our ancestors. We should ensure that we consume food produced within our own community.”
