Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has raised alarm over the pressing issue of drug abuse affecting youths in the country. During a recent address at an online learning event, he highlighted the alarming trend of young individuals being used for drug trafficking and their growing involvement in substance consumption.
Professor Prasad emphasized that there is an urgent need for collective action to combat this escalating crisis, urging that it is crucial to safeguard the younger generation from the devastating impacts of drug abuse. He firmly stated, “It is something that we must all reject. We must all work very hard to ensure that no one, none of our young people, none of our children, is exposed to them.”
Reinforcing the Deputy Prime Minister’s remarks, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu provided troubling statistics indicating that marijuana remains the most seized substance, with nearly five tons confiscated across various divisions. While he noted a temporary decrease in marijuana-related cases between March and May, the police continue to carry out community policing and interventions aimed at dismantling drug supply chains.
Tudravu pointed out that May saw a 13 percent rise in drug-related cases, with 143 incidents logged. Of these, 123 cases were for unlawful possession of illicit drugs, and marijuana was involved in the majority of incidents. The police are determined to strengthen their efforts and have expressed commitment to address any complicity among law enforcement in enabling the drug trade.
Professor Prasad’s stance is echoed in his previous speeches, where he consistently labeled drug abuse as a national crisis that poses a grave threat to the fabric of society. He reiterated the importance of community engagement and cooperation from parents, teachers, and law enforcement to foster a safer environment for children. Enhancing awareness and promoting ethical values among youth are seen as pivotal steps in building a resilient future against the backdrop of this crisis.
As authorities ramp up their initiatives to tackle drug abuse through both enforcement and educational strategies, there is a hopeful outlook that with collective efforts, communities can rally to protect and guide the younger generations towards healthier choices.
