Pacific Islands are currently confronting a dire situation that threatens their very existence, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad. Speaking at the High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific held in Bangkok, he emphasized the urgent need for reforms in global development assistance, debt sustainability, and climate finance to combat the severe impacts of climate change and economic instability that small island nations endure.
Professor Prasad pointed out that economies have experienced staggering contractions ranging from 30 to 70 percent due to single cyclones, highlighting the extreme challenges faced by these nations. As he prepares for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (F4D), he stressed the importance of reshaping international policies to better cater to the unique needs of vulnerable countries.
He advocated for a shift away from systems that circumvent local governments, urging that aid should empower nations to take charge of their development. Additionally, he appealed to wealthier countries to honor their commitments, such as the longstanding target of allocating 0.7 percent of their GDP for Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) by 2030, and called for more effective and urgent climate finance solutions.
