In her recent statement, Minister Lynda Tabuya emphasized the pressing need to combat child abuse and neglect in Fiji. This call to action coincides with two important international observances: the International Day for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect on November 19 and World Children’s Day on November 20.
“These events serve as a reminder of our commitment to upholding children’s rights and implementing effective prevention programs,” Minister Tabuya remarked.
Shocking statistics from the National Database of the Child Welfare Act reveal that 1,477 cases of child abuse and neglect were reported in 2023 alone. Of these incidents, 68% were categorized as neglect, physical abuse, or sexual abuse, with a staggering 73% of perpetrators known to the victims. Alarmingly, half of these perpetrators were immediate family members.
Minister Tabuya stressed the necessity of evaluating the nation’s efforts in protecting children and renewing focus on preventing abuse, especially in domestic environments. She stated, “We must do more to safeguard our children and ensure their rights are fulfilled.”
This ongoing commitment to addressing child abuse and neglect highlights the importance of community vigilance and the implementation of preventive measures. It reflects a positive step forward in creating a safer environment for all children in Fiji, urging society to unite in this critical mission.
In summary, the call from Minister Tabuya underscores the urgent need for continued awareness, education, and action to protect the rights and welfare of children, encouraging collective efforts to combat child abuse effectively.
