Diabetes Fiji Inc. is urgently calling for a unified national response to combat the escalating diabetes crisis in the country, labeling it as a public health emergency requiring immediate and coordinated intervention. Executive Director Marawa Kini emphasized the challenges faced by families living with diabetes, especially those with children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, acknowledging the resilient advocacy of young individuals like Nathan Cokanauto. His determination to raise awareness about living with diabetes reflects the spirit of hope prevalent among many young Fijians determined not to be defined by their condition.

Kini stated, “Nathan represents the thousands of young Fijians who are refusing to be defined by their diagnosis. His courage, discipline, and leadership offer a powerful message; not just to those with diabetes, but to the entire nation.” This highlights the crucial role of support systems including parents, caregivers, and community advocates, who are instrumental in helping young people manage their diabetes and pursue their goals effectively.

The severity of diabetes in Fiji is underscored by alarming statistics, with the disease linked to high rates of amputations, kidney failure, blindness, and premature death, placing a substantial burden on the healthcare system. Mr. Kini pointed out that diabetes is not merely a medical issue, but a national crisis that affects productivity, household incomes, education, and social stability, asserting that it is a collective responsibility.

The organization is appealing to government leaders, policymakers, civil society, and the private sector to prioritize diabetes prevention and education as a matter of national importance. “We must treat not just the symptoms, but the systems. Prevention must be at the core of national health policy,” Kini insisted.

Diabetes Fiji Inc. is committed to enhancing its community-based programs, which align with Fiji’s National Development Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These initiatives focus on school outreach, peer support groups, and training for healthcare professionals, aiming to effectively address the diabetes epidemic head-on.

Recognizing the role of the media in amplifying the voices of those affected by diabetes, Mr. Kini urged everyone to move beyond mere awareness and take actionable steps to support early screening and accessible care for families dealing with diabetes.

“Your strength is shaping the future of our nation,” he told healthcare workers, families, and young individuals living with diabetes. With shared determination and proactive measures, Fiji can steer towards a healthier future, ensuring that no one faces the challenges of diabetes alone.
