Urgent Call to Action: Fiji’s Alarming HIV Surge Sparks Community Response

Jone Usamate, an Opposition Member of Parliament, has expressed alarm over the recent rise in HIV cases in Fiji, calling it a startling indication that demands immediate governmental action via a comprehensive community approach.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, 522 new HIV cases have been reported, marking a 33 percent increase compared to the figures from 2023. Of these, 85 cases were linked to injectable drug use.

Usamate emphasized the vulnerability of young people in this context, advocating for proactive engagement in constructive activities to prevent them from falling into the cycle of drug abuse and risky sexual behavior, which can lead to HIV transmission.

He noted that recent reports indicate a troubling trend among youth transitioning from using suki to marijuana and then progressing to harder substances.

The MP highlighted that some countries have implemented syringe service programs to provide access to clean and sterile needles, which also includes safe disposal options for used syringes. However, he cautioned that such initiatives might be perceived as endorsing drug use through needle sharing.

Usamate described these measures as reactive and called for stronger proactive strategies that involve not just the government but also religious organizations, families, and educational institutions.

“We must unite as a nation to combat this crisis,” Usamate concluded.
