Health Minister Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu has called for immediate nationwide measures to combat the alarming rise in food and fish poisoning cases affecting Fijians. He characterized these incidents as severe yet preventable health threats that have persisted over the past decade. While specific local statistics were not provided, Dr. Lalabalavu referenced global data from the World Health Organization, which estimates that unsafe food contributes to 600 million illnesses each year worldwide.

Dr. Lalabalavu stressed the dangers of unsafe food, which can be contaminated by bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemicals, leading to over 200 diseases ranging from mild gastrointestinal issues to life-threatening conditions. He noted a particularly concerning statistic regarding children under the age of five who comprise only 9% of the global population but constitute nearly 40% of food-borne diseases and 30% of related deaths. This disproportionate impact places their health at risk, potentially resulting in malnutrition and even fatalities.

The Minister emphasized the necessity for rigorous food safety practices throughout Fiji’s food supply chain, which encompasses farmers, markets, restaurants, and households. He reaffirmed that ensuring food safety is critical not only for health but also for enabling access to essential nutrients that contribute to educational success and overall productivity.

Previous discussions on food safety in Fiji have highlighted similar concerns, with a notable rise in food safety complaints being reported. Efforts by the Ministry of Health, alongside organizations like the Consumer Council of Fiji, aim to elevate hygiene standards and ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

Though the challenges are significant, there is a growing collaboration between health authorities and consumer protection agencies, showing a commitment to enhancing food safety practices. The community’s involvement and awareness are vital in tackling these issues and fostering a healthier environment for all Fijians. With proactive measures and adherence to safety regulations, there remains hope for a safer and healthier future regarding food consumption in Fiji.
