Social media users are being urged to take action against the sharing and sale of intimate videos and photos of individuals without their consent, particularly on Facebook. Tajeshwari Devi, acting executive director of the Online Safety Commission (OSC), expressed concern regarding the trend of posting screenshots of explicit content on the platform.

In response to inquiries, Ms. Devi emphasized that such actions fall under the category of image-based abuse, which is subject to serious consequences. She stated that the OSC can only intervene and seek to remove such abusive content from social media after a formal report is made by the affected individuals.

Ms. Devi reassured the public, saying, “If you are experiencing image-based abuse, you are not alone; we are here to help.” The OSC has a process in place where they will first review the complaint, consult with the victim, and then reach out to the relevant social media company to request the removal of the harmful content.

Communications Minister Manoa Kamikamica echoed these sentiments, urging anyone who encounters such troubling behavior to report it to the OSC immediately. This cooperation between the public and regulatory bodies aims to foster a safer online environment for all users.

Overall, the OSC’s proactive approach allows victims to regain control over their images and promotes a sense of community support against image-based abuse. By encouraging individuals to report these incidents, there is hope for a safer and more respectful online landscape where such violations will be addressed swiftly and effectively.
